Certified Nurse Midwife — Leland & wilmington, NC
You've already imagined your home birth. Now let's make it real.
Evidence-based home birth care for families in the Wilmington and Brunswick County area — from your first prenatal visit to your final postpartum check.
Free consultation. No pressure. Limited spots available each month.
"You don't want a birth that happens to you."
You've done the research. You've read the statistics. You know that labor and delivery doesn't have to mean bright lights, a revolving door of strangers, and decisions being made without you.
But you also have questions. Real ones. What if something goes wrong? What if I'm too far? What if it's not safe?
Those questions deserve honest answers — and a midwife who will sit with you and walk through every single one of them, without rushing you out the door.
That is exactly what I am here for.
"Home birth isn't the absence of safety. It's the presence of someone who knows you and never leaves your side."
At Wild Moon Midwifery, I offer something the hospital system and birth centers rarely can: continuity. I am the same person who takes your blood pressure at 10 weeks, answers your 2am text at 36 weeks, and catches your baby at 40 weeks. By the time you are in labor, I am not a stranger. I am someone you trust completely.
That trust is not an accident. It is built — appointment by appointment, conversation by conversation — over the course of your entire pregnancy.
Your Midwife
Casey Hartell, DNP, CNM, WHNP
I am a Certified Nurse Midwife and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner with over 10 years of experience in women's health and four years catching babies — in hospitals, at a freestanding birth center, and now in homes.
I served as a Navy Nurse for five years, including a deployment aboard the USNS Comfort. I earned my doctorate from Georgetown University with a concentration in Women's Health and Midwifery. I know what high-risk looks like — and I know when everything is beautifully, perfectly normal.
What I care about most is this: that you feel informed, respected, and never alone. That is what I bring to every single client.

Still have questions? Good.
These are the questions I hear most often — and I want you to have real answers.
Is home birth actually safe?
For low-risk pregnancies, yes — and the research supports it. Planned home birth with a certified midwife is a well-studied, evidence-based choice. I bring clinical skills, emergency medications, oxygen, and resuscitation equipment to every birth. I also have extensive hospital experience, so I know the difference between normal and not-normal. We will discuss your complete health history during your consultation so you can make a fully informed decision.
What happens if I need to transfer to a hospital?
I plan for this before every birth, not during it. I have a transfer relationship with a local hospital and I will accompany you, advocate for you, and brief the receiving team. Transfers are not emergencies — the vast majority are non-urgent decisions made together.Â
What areas do you serve?
I am based in Leland, NC and serve families throughout Brunswick County, New Hanover County, and surrounding areas. If you are unsure whether you are in my service area, just reach out — I would rather answer the question than have you wonder.
When should I reach out?
As early as possible. I limit the number of clients I take each month so I can give every family my full attention, and spots fill based on due dates. If you are newly pregnant and considering home birth, now is the right time to start a conversation — even if you are still deciding.
Do you take insurance?
I am a private-pay practice. I can provide a detailed superbill for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many HSA and FSA accounts also cover certified midwifery services. I am happy to talk through your options during our consultation.
What if I'm not sure home birth is right for me?
That is exactly what the free consultation is for. You are not committing to anything. We sit down, you ask every question on your list, I share what I can offer, and we both get to decide if it is a good fit. No pressure, ever.
I've been seeing another provider. Can I transfer my care to Wild Moon Midwifery?
Yes — I am happy to welcome transfer clients. If you are currently seeing another provider and would like to switch your prenatal care to Wild Moon Midwifery, I can accept transfers up to 36 weeks of pregnancy. If you are considering a transfer, please reach out as soon as possible so we can make the transition smooth and seamless for you. You deserve care that feels right, and it is never too late to make a change.
Do you offer a reduced fee if I transfer care later in pregnancy?
I do not offer reduced fees for transfers later in pregnancy, and here is why: the majority of your home birth fee supports your labor, delivery, and the prenatal visits that are most concentrated in your third trimester — which is exactly when transfer clients are joining. Every client receives the same level of excellent, personalized care regardless of when they come to me, and I keep my fees consistent across the board so that care is never compromised. Thank you for understanding.
What criteria defines a low-risk pregnancy?
At Wild Moon Midwifery, I provide care for women who are considered low-risk with uncomplicated pregnancies. I continuously monitor you throughout your pregnancy and labor to make sure a home birth remains the right and safe choice for you and your baby — and I will always be honest with you if anything changes. The following are medical conditions that would prevent a safe home birth and require a higher level of care:
- Prior Cesarean Section
- Twins or multiples
- High blood pressure
- Breech presentation at delivery
- Placenta previa
- Bleeding or clotting disorders
- Liver, lung, kidney, or heart disease
- Insulin-dependent diabetes or gestational diabetes requiring medication
- Previous Rh sensitization
- Hyperthyroidism requiring medication
- Severe current untreated psychiatric illness
- BMI over 40
- Unmanaged seizure disorders or prior seizure in labor
- Active sexually transmitted infections or blood-borne illness
- Significant drug or alcohol addiction or abuse
- Fetal growth restriction
- Some abnormalities found on fetal ultrasound
If you are unsure whether your history qualifies, please reach out. Our free consultation is the perfect place to talk through your specific situation together.
